6 Winter Home Habits That Could Save You a Fortune
Winter can be beautiful, but it’s also one of the harshest seasons on your home. These small tasks may not be glamorous, but they can prevent expensive surprises and keep your home running safely and efficiently through the cold months.
Most fans have a small switch that reverses the direction. In winter, set your fan to spin clockwise on low to push warm air back down and improve heating efficiency.
A clean filter keeps your system running efficiently and helps prevent breakdowns during the months when you need it most. Aim to replace it every one to three months depending on usage.
Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal any gaps. If you can see daylight or feel cold air, you’re losing heat and raising your energy bill unnecessarily.
A water heater blanket and a few foam pipe covers are inexpensive and can help prevent heat loss and frozen pipes. It’s one of those small upgrades that pays for itself quickly.
If you have a basement, pour a bucket of water into the sump pit to make sure the pump turns on and works properly. You don’t want to discover an issue during a January thaw.
After a snowfall, make sure exterior vents for dryers, furnaces, and hot water heaters are clear. Blocked vents can be dangerous and reduce appliance efficiency.
